The relationship between a creative genius and a defensively rigid coach is often marked by tensions, and De Bruyne’s spell
Kevin De Bruyne struggled during his first season at Napoli under manager Antonio Conte, following his free transfer from Manchester City in the summer of 2025.
The Belgian midfielder, who had an illustrious 10-year career at City winning numerous trophies including six Premier League titles and a Champions League, found it difficult to replicate his usual world-class numbers in Serie A.
In an interview with Het Nieuwsblad, De Bruyne openly stated that Conte’s “very different vision of football” was the root cause of his difficulties. He explained that Conte’s “generally negative approach” and a system that “prioritized defensive solidity over creative expression” severely repressed his individual talent. This clash of footballing philosophies limited De Bruyne to just 21 appearances across all competitions. O jogador também criticou as táticas defensivas da equipe, dizendo: “Jogamos de forma muito defensiva. Se você marca um gol por partida em um 5-4-1… Isso não é tão bom assim. No início do ano, também jogamos muito, muito recuados. Nosso artilheiro tem 10 gols, então, sim, você sabe que as estatísticas não estão lá, mas em termos de nível e futebol, achei que foi bem aceitável.”
